It brings to mind an old TV commercial from the 1960’s, which was for the headache reliever “Anacin,” where the daughter-in-law snaps: “Mother, I’d rather do it myself!” She should have tried your recommended techniques (but then I guess she wouldn’t have needed Anacin to deal with her mother-in-law). In an advice column in the morning newspaper, one person wrote in wondering how to do with in-laws that do a “clean-up” and “fix-up” of her house every time they visit. It is intended to be a gesture of kindly helpfulness, but the letter writer felt criticized and belittled.
