The Enlightenment, the Story of Science and Weber’s Protestant ethic of capitalism fortified Modernity’s commodifying humans and lifestyles with mass consumerism and ethos of individual and societal improvement to stave off the Ernest Becker Denial of Death in the search for transcendence of mortality. William James Pragmatism and Madame Blavatsky Theosophy paved the way for the 20th Century cult of Freudian (and other) psychotherapies and the success of so many Step programs following Alcoholics Anonymous, at least until the drug culture imported Eastern traditions and psychedelic mysticism (not to overlook the School of Practical Philosophy, either). I guess “coaching” has supplanted all this? What next, Yoda?
