In reply to <a href="https://madelaineweiss.com/wfh-working-from-home/#comment-4">Karen Gross</a>.

Thank you, Karen, for your thoughtful comments. Call me glass half full, but I do not believe the die is cast. Trauma response is just that, a response to an event, not the event itself, and people do respond differently. Many I know, myself included, do not at all feel that "the 5 S’s: stability, structure, safety, subtlety (personalization) and someones (folks who believe in you outside the home)....are now gone," as you suggest. Some may, but not all. Some will do better than others and we will likely see some more general effects going forward too, e.g reduced handshaking, which could be a good thing after all. When I was in Turkey people often said hello with their eyes, a rather sweet kind of nod. In any case, we do agree that there are things we can do, and that we should try to do them.

Again, thank you for writing. Can you please say more about "subtlety (personalization)" - and others of you feel free to pitch in.

I like this post a lot but I disagree as to whether we are traumatized now and showing trauma symptomology. Trauma takes away the 5 S’s: stability, structure, safety, subtlety (personalization) and someones (folks who believe in you outside the home). These are now gone and folks are reflecting this in their behavior. Putting in structure restores two S’s. So my view is do what is needed to restore the 5 Ss. It will help. Unlike drugs for the virus, it can’t hurt. Be well. Stay safe.
